Getting Rid of Birds in The Chimney
As the colder Indianapolis months approach, it’s normal for small animals to seek shelter in any warm place they can find. Unfortunately, this often means they find their way into our garages, sheds, and even chimneys. Since birds are able to fly, they are the most likely to end up in your chimney. Once birds get in your chimney, they can nest and begin creating a new home. There are a few key points to know when there are birds in the chimney.
But birds in the chimney of your Indianapolis home is not good for the birds or for you. You may hear chirping and noise, and notice droppings in your fireplace. Birds can easily become trapped or end up caught in the hazardous smoke of your fire and pass away in the chimney. Removing birds from your chimney is crucial for the safe operation of your fireplace.
Try These Methods to Shoo Away Birds
There are some at-home methods you can try to get birds out of your chimney. If you can reach it, you should remove the nest. Make sure to wait for any young birds to leave first. Remove and relocate the nest to prevent a fire hazard.
You may also try setting a pan of ammonia in the fireplace to send up an unpleasant smell for the birds. It can take up to two weeks for this method to work.
You can also try scaring the birds with noise. Many birds are frightened by loud noises. Try playing your radio loud and constantly right under your chimney. Again, it may take a couple of weeks for the noise to annoy the birds enough for them to leave.
