Unlike the throat damper, top-mount dampers sit near the top of the chimney. You control them with a stainless steel cable that hangs down through the chimney. The dampers seal completely and provide a very tight seal. They are also easy to install and help you save energy. People commonly use these in new construction, and may even add one to their chimney even if they have a throat damper because of the additional energy efficiency they provide. The top-mount damper is a better, more affordable option for fireplace dampers, and they serve as both a throat damper and chimney cap!
