One of the best investments for your Indianapolis home is a fireplace. Classic wood-burning fireplaces have a nostalgic appeal, but they require quite a bit of maintenance. Right now, gas fireplaces are gaining popularity, and many people want to get them because they believe gas fireplaces don’t have a chimney flue.
But it’s not quite that simple…
So, does a gas fireplace have a chimney flue?
What’s a Chimney Flue?
A chimney has several different parts that are important to know. The flue is the part that directs the toxic gases from your fireplace to the atmosphere. The flue protects the chimney walls, so it is on the inside of the chimney tower. It’s highly recommended to install a flue liner to further protect the chimney and reduce the chances of a flue fire.
Gas Fireplace Venting
The chimney flue is a clear necessity for a wood-burning fireplace, as it directs the gases from your fireplace out of your home. Without the flue, the smoke and other gases would fill up your home. But how does venting work for a gas fireplace?
There are two types of gas log sets, vented or ventless. Typically, ventless options may not require a chimney flue and exhaust for the combustion gases. However, some gas log sets will still need a chimney to dissipate the heat from burning. You may be able to vent a ventless gas log set into your existing fireplace. On the other hand, vented gas logs definitely require a code-compliant chimney system. Therefore, the majority of gas log sets require installation into a properly maintained chimney system.
Gas Fireplace Maintenance
Gas fireplaces do not mean you are maintenance-free. You still need your yearly chimney sweep and inspection to service the fireplace. A professional will remove any debris, animals, and dust from the chimney and clean the appliance fully. During this process, they may also identify any venting issues or other concerns and correct them before they begin big, expensive repairs.
As you can see, it’s not always clear if a gas fireplace needs a chimney flue, but in many cases it does. The only way to know for sure is to consult a professional.
